I think it's a blend of two things. 1)They have always been weak and insecure people masquerading as strong and powerful. 2)They believe their own power is more important than democracy. From this, to gerrymandering, to McConnell's maneuvering to fill the courts with unqualified conservative justices, the part has spent a long time trying to consolidate power so voters can't take it away.

The only difference is that Trump has made it more blatant, and we're all paying attention.
I don't think gerrymandering, and fecklessness, are limited to a single party. They're ubiquitous to the institution itself. If I were a standard deviation higher I'd be an awesome senator.
