Simply owning a gun in the US is not evidence of extremism.
A gun, of course not. A semi-automatic weapon designed for no other purpose than killing as many people as possible in a short amount of time, yes. Guns like that are completely unnecessary for protecting your house or hunting.

It's the same thing as the people who go out and buy sports cars that do 0-60 in three seconds. That's nice, but you can never use them legally on the roads, so what's the point? They serve to make inadequate people feel better about themselves.

I have no problem with people having handguns for protection, or shotguns to go hunting with (although, if we're being honest, there's nothing 'sporting' about using a weapon to kill an animal that can't defend itself). That's fine. But yes, I absolutely have a problem with a gun culture that says everyone can own as deadly, powerful, and fast a weapon as they can produce. The NRA poisoned this conversation by equating assault rifles with handguns, saying that taking any gun off the streets means taking every gun off them.

I don't think it's a coincidence at all that mass shootings were a rarity before that kind of weaponry became easy to get. So yes, seeing someone on the streets waving a weapon that can kill twenty people in a minute pisses me off. And so does seeing an entire political party that defends the people that do it.
